Quick Thoughts on the Dubai World Cup

The World Cup goes off in a little more than an hour, and I figured I’d briefly chime in with some thoughts…

  • Horses close to the pace have fared well since the switch to Meydan Racecourse
  • Royal Delta‘s “new” tactical speed could be the difference for her and Mike Smith today
  • Hunter’s Light loves the distance and the surface – he’s going to be a bear in this spot
  • I HAVE to believe that Gary Stevens wouldn’t pass up a day of major Kentucky Derby preps to go to Dubai unless he thought Dullahan had a chance…he’s going to be the best price of the Americans…
  • Animal Kingdom looms large, but the thought of making a huge run from the back makes me a bit concerned
  • Meandre is a really interesting candidate in this spot – should be a huge price, distance may be a bit short…but definitely intriguing
  • African Story is super classy, could successfully stretch out and be a major player in this race

The American contingent won’t offer a ton of value in the World Cup, so if you’re looking for a price, look elsewhere. I want to believe Animal Kingdom is simply better than the rest of the competition – it’s important to remember that the Gulfstream Turf Handicap was strictly a prep for this race. Point of Entry is probably the best turf horse we have in America, and AK only lost to him by a length and change. The race setup isn’t ideal for his running style, but I’d have to go with Animal Kingdom to win the Dubai World Cup.
